Specific Resources on the Internet
The Internet is great for the number of websites that are dedicated to quite specific areas of interesting subjects. Such sites are often privately financed and run by individuals or groups dedicated to both preserving our heritage and opening it up to a wider audience.
- Coastguards of Yesteryear - A site dedicated to the Coastguards who lived and worked around the Irish coastline between the 18th and early 20th centuries. It includes a collection of CG station photos as well as facts and figures about the people , births, deaths, census information, etc. There are also some fascinating accounts of bravery during rescues from shipwrecks as well as interesting extracts of shipwrecks and rescues.
- The Royal Dublin Fusiliers - A website dedicated to this infantry regiment of the British army.
- Kent Fallen - A website dedicated to the fallen of Kent. Includes many memorials throughout the county, plus articles on Kent regiments.
- Scottish War Graves Project & Scottish War Memorial Project - Two forum websites that have been set up by a group of like-minded enthusiasts who share an interest in Scottish war graves & memorials. It is a place to share information about graves & memorials and where members can help each other with their research.
- Crimean War Research Society - This society exists to honour and remember those that fell in the war and to study the war in its entirety. From mainstream topics like the deaths from disease in the Crimea and the naval confrontation in the Baltic to little-known aspects of the war such as the British Army's refusal to deploy poison gas at Sevastopol, and the naval actions in the Pacific.
- Suffolk Churches - This website is an independent guide to the Anglican and Catholic churches in the county of Suffolk. The aim has been to document a visit to each church, giving some history and location details, as well as photographs where possible.
- Norfolk Churches - As above, but for the county of Norfolk.
- London, Essex, Kent & Suffolk Pubs - A website about public houses in the listed counties. There are currently about 14,000 listed with several thousand photographs on the site.
- The History of Redhill & Reigate - Extremely detailed and interesting site by Alan Moore and Richard Symonds. Includes over 2,000 photographs covering the history and development of the two towns. Topics covered include the Home Guard, local families, blacksmiths and public houses.
