The name of Masset (usually pronounced Mazeh) originates from the continent and is most prevalent in France and Germany. However the name has a very small presence in the United Kingdom, in the 1891 census for example there are only twenty occurrences of the surname noted, mainly in Lancashire, followed by Surrey. Masset is also a renown fishing village in Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia, Canada. It is located on the northern coast of Graham Island, the largest island in the archipelago. The name originates originates from the Captain of a Spanish vessel that was repaired with the assistance of the locals.

Etienne Ernest Magloire Masset was born during 1834 in France and moved to London and married Elizabeth Rebecca Reffell in 1859 at All Souls. One of their four children became involved with a notorious murder case.
