Get The Name Right...

Our surname has a contorted origin and is believed to be an Anglicised adoption of the French version of the Jewish given name RAPHAEL. Being relatively rare and unusual, it is often miss-spelt and many variants have been noted and whilst some of these variants are obviously ‘sound-alike's’, there are also genuine variations. Even today within the family the name is pronounced a number of ways.

This can make research into our surname both interesting and complex; not only may there be transcription errors in the secondary documentation, the primary documentation may also be suspect:-

Well, Caroline knows how to spell her surname, it is just a shame that the person who married them doesn't. It may be just one of those things, he may have misheard our unusual surname or he may have been a locum. However if he was the regular then he should have known that the road just around the corner from the church is in fact called Greek Street, not Greece Street...
