Personal Information:

George Frederick Sales was born in 5 Union Street Marylebone in 1891. He was the only son of George Sales, a general labourer, and his Irish partner Agnes Faulkner.

George enlisted at Marylebone in 1914 in the 12th (Service) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) as Private G4439. After training the battalion went to France on 31st August and 1st September 1915. Following some movement in the army,
George returned to the Royal Fusiliers on 15th March 1917, being posted to their 4th Battalion and eventually being promoted to Serjeant.

On 5th February 1918 he married Phyllis May Bell at St. Peter’s Church Loughborough, but was killed in action on 21st March 1917, aged 26, during the German Spring Offensive. He had been married for just six weeks.

Phyllis May Sales married George Henry Cox in 1918 in Wandsworth and in 1921 they were living at 26 Warham Street, Lambeth with their two year old son John.
