The Reffell Family History website was first launched on the Internet in 2001 as a joint initiative between Bernie and John Reffell at www.reffell.info transferring to www.reffell.org.uk in 2006. At the start there were four articles about the family with small photographs, a brief family tree, a few links to other websites and a contact email address.
The website has had a range of appearances over the last twenty years as can be seen in the screenshots below. Even in 2001 there were estimated to be over 29 million websites worldwide, with an estimated 1.7 billion around today. Even bigger growth has been the increase in functionality of websites, with consistent visual design over desktops, laptops, tablets and mobiles being ever more important.
Originally written in HTML 2, a big challenge in the early years was the incompatibility between the various Internet Browsers of the time. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 was the dominant software at the time, but was being challenged by Firefox 1 and Opera 5. Google Chrome was first released in 2008. Eventually these browsers began working closer together, but still some differences can be seen between them. A big step forward was taken when the website was converted to WordPress during February 2017 giving a easier control of functions and administration.
