Henry Joshua Reffell had moved from London to South Glamorgan in the 1880s and was living at Tonkin Crossing House, Higher Coychurch. he was employed on the Great Western Railway as a platelayer. Also there was his wife Sarah Elizabeth and two of their sons; Charles & Fred who were both employed as coal miners. Unmarried daughter Edith lived with them and there was a lodger, who was also a platelayer. Unfortunately Henry’s mother Amelia was now an inmate in the Bridgend And Cowbridge Union Workhouse.
Eldest son John William was also a coal miner and lived at Ivy Cottage in Heoly Cyw Bridgend with wife Margaret and their children Florence May, William Albet, Edith Maud, Sarah Lavinia & Doris. Another coal miner son William Henry lived nearby at Railway Terrace in Heoly Cyw with wife Mary and children William John & Nellie Jane.
